Together with you, we will give back by supporting an NGO that focuses on preservation, conservation and restoration of ecosystems. We will work with a project that engages in the conservation of wetlands. Wetlands and peatlands are extremely important carbon sinks; they cool the landscape and store and filter water and also provide a habitant for rare species.

MEET 'BERGWALDPROJEKT'OUR PARTNER NGO

Bergwaldprojekt e.V. ('Mountain Forest Project') has been organising volunteer work in forests, moors and open landscapes for 35 years. In 2025, the association will organise 196 weeks of work at 95 different locations in Germany, bringing around 5,000 volunteers into nature.

The aims of the work assignments are to protect, preserve and restore biodiversity and the diverse functions of ecosystems, to make participants aware of the importance and vulnerability of our natural resources, and to encourage society to use limited natural resources in a nature-friendly and socially just manner.

The NGO has been certified by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation as a UN Decade Project for the restoration of ecosystems and biodiversity.

WHERE THE MONEY WILL EXACTLY GOWATER RETENTION

In the Rauer Grund nature reserve near Schwaney in Germany, volunteers from the Bergwaldprojekt ('Mountain Forest Project') are working to restore valuable wetlands and boggy areas. The aim of these measures is to enhance natural water retention in the landscape and to gradually restore the disturbed ecosystem.

By filling in drainage ditches and removing non-native tree species such as spruce, the natural water conditions are being restored. This allows more water to be retained in the area – an important prerequisite for the development of species-rich wetland habitats and a resilient landscape water balance.
The wetland areas provide a habitat for specialised and protected Red List species such as bog birch, marsh violet, sundew and cranberry. Typical quaking sedge meadows and peat mosses also benefit when the water balance stabilises in the long term.

Intact bogs are among the most effective natural carbon sinks on Earth. They sequester CO₂ over the long term, store water, balance out periods of high and low water levels, and provide a unique habitat for numerous specialised species. Restored bog areas safeguard key functions for climate, biodiversity and water protection.

COVERING DRAINAGE DITCHES

For centuries, water has been drained away from the wetlands via drainage ditches. As part of the project week, the volunteers are blocking these ditches with wooden barriers and then filling them with wood chips and sawdust. This ensures that the water remains in the area and the natural water balance is stabilised in the long term. By retaining water in the landscape and harnessing the cooling effect of the moors on the climate, this initiative improves not only biodiversity but also our own living conditions.
