MEET 'BERGWALDPROJEKT'OUR PARTNER NGO

Bergwaldprojekt e.V. ('Mountain Forest Project') has been organising volunteer work in forests, moors and open landscapes for 35 years. In 2025, the association will organise 196 weeks of work at 95 different locations in Germany, bringing around 5,000 volunteers into nature.

The aims of the work assignments are to protect, preserve and restore biodiversity and the diverse functions of ecosystems, to make participants aware of the importance and vulnerability of our natural resources, and to encourage society to use limited natural resources in a nature-friendly and socially just manner.

The NGO has been certified by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation as a UN Decade Project for the restoration of ecosystems and biodiversity.

WHERE THE MONEY WILL EXACTLY GOFOREST PRESERVATION

Since 1991, volunteers have planted several thousand trees, created kilometres of trails and maintained countless hectares of protective forest and capercaillie habitats during the 'Bergwaldprojekt' weeks in Balderschwang, Germany. Much has already been achieved, but there is still a lot to do.

The forest must be converted into a stable mixed mountain forest that, among other things, provides protection against avalanches and erosion, filters and retains drinking water, ensures clean air and provides a habitat for both humans and animals. The forest must also continue to be maintained for the capercaillie.

The work is being carried out on land belonging to the Sonthofen forestry operation of the Bavarian State Forestry Authority, which has been a partner of Bergwaldprojekt e.V. since 1991. The Sonthofen forestry operation covers approximately 18,000 hectares. Around 5,500 hectares of this is designated as protective forest, and the more than 500 hectares of spruce moor forests are also considered special areas for nature conservation.
