How to maintain your Sea to Summit tent
After buying a Sea to Summit tent, there are a few things you can consider to further extend the durability of your tent.
Below we have put together a few tips for keeping your tent in good condition.
GENERAL TIPS FOR CORRECT USE
- Please do not leave a lightweight tent pitched for prolonged periods in strong sunlight; the UV will damage the fabric relatively quickly.
- Choose a campsite sheltered from the wind – lightweight tents must be guyed out in wind speeds above 20mph / 30kph.
BACK HOME FROM AN ADVENTURE? HERE IS WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU RETURN FROM YOUR TRIP:
- Air your tent out thoroughly: Please separate the inner tent and rainfly and hang them up until they are completely dry.
- Do not store it in the supplied stuffsack – fold the inner / rainfly loosely and store them on a well-ventilated shelf or in a mesh bag. Do not store the tent tightly rolled, or store the tent in a sealed tote.
HOW TO WASH/ CARE FOR YOUR TENT:
Clean the zippers using a canister vacuum with a brush after desert / beach trips, then lubricate with a zipper lubricant.
Do not wash a tent in a washing machine: Use hand washing with a mild soap instead (Nikwax Tech Wash or Grangers Performance Wash), rinse thoroughly and air dry.
HOW TO REPAIR IT:
Most small tears can be repaired with Gear Aid Seam Grip +WP (used on the same side of the fabric as the seam taped seams). A repair kit is available HERE.
Tears in the inner tent mesh can be repaired with a strip of Tenacious Tape on the inner and outer faces of the mesh.
HOW TO DEAL WITH MOLD/ MILDEW:
If a tent smells musty when you go to use it, it has begun to develop mildew. Treat the tent with Revivex Odor Eliminator. If the mildew or mold has progressed beyond a faint musty smell, the urethane coating may well already have been compromised.
HOW TO REFRESH THE DWR:
An aftermarket water-repellent treatment such as Nikwax TX Direct or Grangers Performance Repel Plus will temporarily improve the ability of the fabric to repel water droplets, but will not restore waterproofness if the urethane coating has been compromised.
